Understanding Spiritual Ranks

DAY 2 OF 7

Wrestling with Principalities

The battle believers face is not just personal or emotional—it is deeply spiritual and globally strategic. The word “principalities” in the Greek is archē, meaning “beginning” or “origin,” pointing to ruling beings that were among the first of God’s created heavenly hosts. These entities are not mere spirits floating around—they are organized, ranked, and positioned over regions, nations, and systems. When Paul says we wrestle against principalities, he is exposing the top-tier forces of spiritual resistance that influence earthly matters.

Principalities were originally created by God as spiritual overseers of nations (Deuteronomy 32:8), but many rebelled and sought worship, power, and dominion over people instead. They became corrupted, turning nations toward idolatry, perversion, and injustice. This is why the fight isn't just about your personal pain or trial—it's connected to a much broader spiritual war for influence and control over territory, cultures, and generations.

Daniel’s experience in chapter 10 is a clear picture of this unseen battle. Though his prayer was heard on day one, the answer was delayed 21 days because of a principality—the spirit prince of Persia—blocking the angelic messenger. Only when the archangel Michael intervened did the breakthrough occur. This reveals two truths: (1) Some of your delays are not due to God's silence but demonic resistance; and (2) persistence in prayer can activate angelic assistance.

These principalities are deeply tied to earthly systems—education, government, media, entertainment, and even religion. That’s why believers must understand the structure of the kingdom of darkness, not to be afraid, but to be effective. When we think of national unrest, widespread perversion, or generational bondage, we’re not just seeing human decisions—we’re seeing the hand of principalities influencing the atmosphere.

You cannot bind a principality casually. The strategy isn’t to randomly yell at spiritual powers but to obey Christ’s command: “Go into all nations, make disciples…” (Matthew 28:19). Discipleship dismantles darkness. As more individuals are transformed by the gospel, the grip of principalities weakens in that region. Revival breaks through when truth takes root.

This is not just about knowing spiritual vocabulary—it’s about kingdom alignment. You have been placed in your nation, city, and family for a purpose. Your prayers, your stand, your spiritual growth—they all challenge the dominion of principalities. You are God’s answer to the oppression in your generation. When you rise in revelation and righteousness, gates begin to open for the King of Glory to enter.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Have you ever felt resistance when pressing into deeper revelation or obedience? Could it be spiritual opposition, not personal failure?
  2. What principality do you sense is operating in your city or nation? How do its fruits manifest in culture or policy?
  3. How can you shift from being a believer who observes culture to one who disciples it?

Action Step:

Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal what principality may be influencing your environment—be it fear, perversion, rebellion, or lawlessness. Then pray boldly, not to bind the spirit directly, but to align your life with heaven’s strategy: truth, obedience, worship, and witness. Fast or intercede this week for your region, and declare that the gates will open for the King of Glory to come in.

About this Plan

Understanding Spiritual Ranks

“The Wrestle is Real” is a 7-day devotional exploring the spiritual battle described in Ephesians 6:12, breaking down the ranks of darkness—principalities, powers, rulers of darkness, and spiritual hosts of wickedness. It equips believers to recognize the enemy’s strategies, stand in their God-given authority, and shift atmospheres through worship, truth, and obedience. This plan is a call to live alert, rooted in Christ, and victorious through spiritual discipline.
