Who Is Jesus?

DAY 2 OF 4

Jesus: Son of God

The New Testament refers to Jesus as the Son of God over 100 times. But what does that title mean? Is it just another name among many, or does it reveal something central about who Jesus is?

What does it mean?

In the Old Testament, “son of God” was used in various ways: to describe angels (Job 1:6), the nation of Israel (Ex. 4:22), and even Israel’s kings (Ps. 2:7). These uses pointed to closeness with God or a special role. But when this title is applied to Jesus, something far greater is being said.

Jesus is not called the Son of God in a metaphorical or symbolic sense. He is the Son in a unique, divine way. In John 1, we read that Jesus, the Word, was with God and was God. He existed before creation, was sent by the Father, and shares in the Father’s nature and work. He raises the dead (Jn 5:21), reveals the Father’s will (Jn 15:15), and is one with the Father in essence (Jn 10:30). This Sonship is not about biology, but it is about identity. Jesus is God from God, Light from Light, equal with the Father.

But “Son of God” also reveals Jesus as the long-awaited Messiah. When God says at Jesus’ baptism, “You are my beloved Son,” He’s echoing Psalm 2 (about Israel’s king) and Isaiah 42 (about God’s servant). In one sentence, God reveals Jesus as both the Davidic King and the Suffering Servant, the one who reigns and redeems. Jesus did not come to overthrow Rome; He came to defeat sin. He did not wear a golden crown, but a crown of thorns. And yet, at the cross, even a Roman centurion declared, “Truly this man was the Son of God” (Mark 15:39).

In a world where emperors claimed to be sons of gods, early Christians proclaimed that Jesus alone is the true Son of God. This was not just theology, it was treason. They were willing to die because they believed Jesus—not Caesar—is King.

Take a moment today to reflect:

  • What does it mean to call Jesus the Son of God, not just in belief, but in loyalty?
