Who Is Jesus?

DAY 4 OF 4

Jesus: Word of God

If someone asked you to describe Jesus in one word, what would you say? Savior? King? Friend? The Apostle John chooses a unique and profound title: Logos, the Word. But what does it mean to call Jesus the Word of God?

What does it mean?

In Jewish thought, God’s word was His action. When God spoke, things happened. His word brought creation into existence (“Let there be light…”), delivered His people, revealed His heart, and accomplished His purposes. Isaiah 55:11 says God’s word never returns empty, it accomplishes what He desires.

In Greek philosophy, logos referred to the reason or principle that governed the universe. But John takes both ideas, Jewish and Greek, and infuses them with something radically new: the Word is a person. He does not just speak God’s truth; He is God’s truth. Jesus is not merely a messenger; He is the message.

John 1:1 opens with a bold declaration: “In the beginning was the Word…” This echoes Genesis 1:1 but reframes it. Before creation began, Jesus already existed. He was with God, distinct, yet was God, fully divine. Jesus is eternal, divine, and uncreated. He is God revealing Himself to us in the clearest way possible.

Then John shocks us in verse 14: “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” The eternal, all-powerful Creator chose to become human. Not distant. Not abstract. But close enough to touch, weep, bleed, and save.

So, what does this mean for us today?

  • First, it means that Jesus is God’s ultimate communication to the world. Want to know who God is? Look at Jesus. His words, His actions, His cross, they are God’s voice in human form.
  • Second, it means that when we open Scripture, we are not just reading information, but we are encountering the Living Word. Jesus speaks today, through His Spirit and through His Word. His voice still creates, convicts, comforts, and calls.
  • Lastly, it means that the Gospel must be spoken. If Jesus is the Word, we too are called to speak, to share the good news with clarity and courage.

Today, do not let your Bible gather dust. Open it. Read it. Hear the Word. Meet the Word. And let Him speak life over your soul.
