Matthew: Healing in His PresenceSample

Freedom From Worry
Oh to live just one day without any worry! Jesus gives us a great example of God's creation that doesn't worry - birds! Just picture any bird you see outside. That bird is not writing a to do list, fretting over its health, freaking out where the next bug or worm will be that it can eat. And the bird is certainly not making plans into the future. It's living life in freedom, being present in the day and living. Don't we all wish we could be a little more free like the birds?
How many times have you worried about something to later find out it was nothing at all? We spend a lot of mental energy and angst fretting over what we cannot control - but God has made us a big promise. He will take care of us.
We may not understand why we're going through something, why we're in pain, will we be able to pay the bills, and the list goes on. But we can look to the One who provides everything for us - Jehovah Jireh, Our Provider! He's really the One in control, not you or me. He knows what you need.
In this passage, Jesus tells us that when we seek first His kingdom and righteousness, all of our basic needs - food, clothing and housing will be taken care of. There is no need to get bogged down with the "what if’s" of the future. God has that covered as well. All we have to do is seek Him first with our concerns. And how liberating is it to give all your worries and cares to God? He can handle them. Let’s focus on our lives today. We are more valuable to God than all of creation.
Questions:
1. What can we learn from the example of the birds that Jesus uses?
2. How does seeking God’s kingdom first change the way we view our needs?
3. What would it look like in your life to truly hand over your worries to God?
