Finding Jesus In Hanakkuh

DAY 6 OF 8

Day 6

Light on a Hill (Practice)

Scripture: Matt 5:14 You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.

Teach: I can only imagine the illumination that came from a lit menorah during those eight special days. How the Holy Place would have been aglow with the warming light that was sustained by this miraculous supply of oil. Rather than a darkened room, there would have been an ambience of light and peace. The strength that the children of God must have received from this light would have been uplifting in every way. Light has the unique ability to help guide through the darkest of times and the most tempestuous storms.

I remember one summer I was on vacation in Argentina, and I decided to take the family for a day trip to Uruguay. We decided to visit the oldest city in the country, a city called Colonia. Walking around this ancient coastal city was a treat for anyone who loved history. One of the things that I did with the children was to scale the lighthouse there in the city. Being an ancient port city, a lighthouse was necessary for travelers and tradesmen alike. Many a ship has run aground upon the rocky shoreline of a port over the centuries, but these lighthouses are there to prevent that from happening. They provide safe navigation. It is the same with Jesus when we are going through the storms of life. Jesus is there as our Light on a hill, however, He tells us that we are also supposed to be like that lighthouse. We are to let the light of the Lord shine through us so that we can also guide and help others. Every time we let our light shine towards others, we produce an opportunity for our good works to glorify the God who created light.

Prayer: Lord, give me the courage to shine my light towards all men for Jesus’ sake. Give me boldness to proclaim Him as my Lord and extol His wondrous works that He has done.
