Connection: Walking with others in exile
When Daniel stood firm in Babylon, he didn’t stand alone. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego walked alongside him. Together, they encouraged one another, prayed together and faced risk together. Their shared faith gave them courage in a foreign land.
Community is not an optional extra in the life of faith. It is essential. From the beginning, God said, “It is not good for man to be alone.” (Genesis 2:18) Jesus sent His disciples out in pairs, and the early church met daily in homes. Faith grows best in fellowship, not isolation.
In exile, the Babylonians wanted to separate these young men from the rest of their people and re-educate them. But Daniel and his friends chose to stay connected to each other and to God. Daniel respectfully appealed for a different diet, and together he and his friends thrived. What might have seemed impossible alone became possible in community.
We too face a culture that can feel like Babylon – full of pressure, distraction and compromise. When we try to stand alone, we can become weary or discouraged. But when we walk with others, our faith is strengthened. True friends remind us of God’s promises, call us back when we drift and stand with us in prayer when life is hard.
Who are your Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego? Who are the people walking with you in faith? And just as importantly, who might need you to walk with them? Christian friendship is not just about receiving encouragement but also giving it.
Reflection:
Who has God placed in my life to strengthen my faith, and how can I encourage them today?
Prayer:
Lord, thank you for friends who walk with me in faith. Help me not to isolate myself but to grow in community. Show me someone I can encourage today, so that together we may stand firm for you. Amen.
