Peter might as well have been a Boy Scout leader, huh? Their motto is simple: Always be prepared. And here, Peter was giving the same advice. The difference? Boy Scouts learn to be prepared to face the challenges of the wilderness, while Peter was training fellow believers to be prepared to face the challenges of life. He knew life would be hard. In fact, he knew that life for those he was writing to at the time was already hard. Holding on to the hope we have in Christ is difficult in moments like that.

So, Peter was encouraging us all to do just that: to hold on to the hope Jesus has put in our hearts. But according to Peter, the preparation doesn’t stop there. We don’t just want to have that hope; we want to be prepared to share it. To tell others why we have hope in the face of hardship. To speak with kindness and respect about why the hope of Christ is the only thing we can trust. To offer that same hope to others who need it in their lives, too.

What situation are you facing right now that makes hope feel hard? How can you hold on to hope and share it with someone else, even in the midst of your trial?

This Is Why

We’ve all had those experiences that are so real and impactful to us that we want other people to know about them, too. More than just telling the people in our lives about it, we want them to feel it, to get it, to care about it, and even experience it the way we do. And for followers of Jesus, our faith is a message of hope we simply can’t keep to ourselves. In this devotional, we’re going to look at what it means to share the gospel of Jesus with the world around us.
