There's a Cry Inside You: Abba, Father
DEVOTIONAL
Underneath the noise of your life, there is a sound you were born again to recognise.
When a child wakes frightened in the night, they do not call out a job title or a list of rules. They cry one word. Dad. It is the most natural, unguarded sound a loved child makes, and it comes out before they are even properly awake. They cry it because somewhere deep down they already know they belong to someone.
Paul says that the moment you came to Christ, God sent the Spirit of His Son into your heart, and that Spirit is crying out one thing: Abba, Father. Not "sinner." Not "slave." Not "try harder." The deepest cry the Holy Spirit is making in you is the cry of a child who is safe with their Dad.
This is part of how you know you are free. A slave works to earn a place in the house. A son or daughter already has one. The Spirit within you is not coaching you to perform your way into the family. He is confirming, over and over, that you are already in it.
The trouble is this cry gets drowned out. The voices of the day are loud, and the slave mindset is old and familiar, so we can be in the family and still feel like staff. We can think we are progressing while quietly feeling distant.
Freedom grows as that one cry gets louder than the others. So here is today's question. When did you last get quiet enough to actually hear it? Tomorrow we learn how a free child walks: led, not driven.
REFLECTION
If you got quiet right now, which voice is louder in you: the cry of a son or daughter, or the old voice of the slave?
FREEDOM STEP
Find two minutes of silence today, and instead of asking God for anything, simply listen for the part of you that already knows how to say "Father."
PRAYER
Father, thank You that Your Spirit is crying out in me that I belong to You. Quieten the louder voices for a moment. Let me hear it, and believe it: I am Your child, not Your servant. Amen.
