Beautiful in His Sight

You are precious and honored in my sight…because I love you.

Isaiah 43:4

Twirling and giggling in her new princess dress, her arms were outstretched with a“Ta-da!” At three, she was feeling beautiful—as if a fairy godmother touched her, creating the best and most beautiful version of her preschool self. Wrapping my arms around her pint-sized body, I spoke into her little ears, “You are beautiful,” and with that, it was settled. For the next hour, she walked out that beauty—a little sweeter and with a smile big enough to express her happiness at being declared beautiful by her Grammy.

It wasn’t the sparkling tiara, wobbly plastic princess heels, or blue tulle satin dress that made her beautiful. It was simply her—a little girl formed miraculously by God. My whisper wasn’t “You are beautiful in that dress,” but simply, “You are beautiful.”

God whispers the same to us grown-up girls. He calls us by name and calls out our beauty. He reminds us that our beauty is not dependent on size, fashion, or age. He knows that we were once little girls who secretly hoped they were beautiful—without props or the validation of good looks or behavior. He declares us beautiful just because—wobbly, worn-out heels and all. We are beauties created by God, and we are His—treasured and greatly loved.

Today I will remember:

• I am precious to God.
• He calls me by name and calls out the beauty in me.
• He honors me with His love.

Lord, from the very beginning, You have held me and called me Your own. Now You whisper Your love into this grown-up girl’s ears. Knowing I am important to You fills me with joy.
