God Will Be With You

I’m with two friends, and we’re talking about seasons of transition. I tell them, “I don’t know what’s next.” They nod in understanding. I’ve been walking through a challenging season, and certainty about the future eludes me.

One reason I’ve struggled with where I am is because I was taught God’s path for me is like a straight line I must figure out and follow. If I deviate at all from it, then I’m out of his will. But in a fallen world, broken obstacles or detours are inevitable. Have you been there too?

This made me worry that somehow anything ahead would always be plan B, because hadn’t plan A been messed up? But I realized that the path of God for my life isn’t about specific details. The path of God for my life is about his presence.

When the Israelites traveled to the promised land, God’s presence was their personal GPS. When the cloud of his presence lifted from the tabernacle, they set out. When it stayed, they encamped. In other words, what mattered most was going with God. We can trust in him with all of our hearts even when we don't understand what is happening.

I look at my friends again, take a deep breath, and speak the truth that’s sustaining my soul: “I don’t know ‘what’ but I do know ‘Who’ and that is enough for today.”

God, thank you that the one constant in my life is your presence and what matters most is that wherever I go, you will be with me.
