Am I in the Right Job? …Guidance From the Bible

DAY 5 OF 7

Does It Fit What God Wants?

If our last step was about finding work that fits “you”, this step takes it deeper:

Does your job fit what God wants?

Before answering that, let’s remind ourselves why we’re even here. According to the very first question of the Westminster Catechism, a theological doctrine written by church leaders in 1646 and 1647, our purpose is simple but profound:

Q1.What is the main purpose of humankind?
A1.Humankind’s main purpose is to glorify God and to enjoy him forever.

That’s not just theology – it’s practical. Just as we saw last time:

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord…” – Colossians 3:23

So if our entire life is meant to glorify God, then our “work” – where we spend most of our waking hours – must do the same.

But how?

It’s less about the “kind” of job you do, and more about “how” you do it.

Whether you’re delivering packages, designing technology, or caring for patients, God is glorified when you do the work well, with excellence and love. Kindness, humility, and respect are not add-ons – they’re the very way we serve the world around us.

Jesus reminds us of this, too:

“Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” – Mark 10:43-45

So here’s the real test:

Are you serving others through your work?

Are you lifting others up, showing grace, and bearing witness to the love of Christ – even if you never speak His name aloud?

Early in my career, I thought I had it all figured out. I planned to work hard, save well, and “then” – later in life – join a nonprofit or Bible ministry to serve God. That’s when I thought I’d finally be useful to Him.

But I was wrong.

God never said to put your calling on hold. He wants to use you “now” – in your current role, in your everyday job. No need to wait until you’re older, richer, or in full-time ministry. If you can serve others and glorify God right where you are, then you’re already in a job that fits what God wants.

So let me ask:

Does your current job let you love, serve, and shine God’s light to others?

If it does, that’s a good fit for God. If it doesn’t, maybe it’s time to rethink why you’re there.

Because God doesn’t need you in a religious role – He just needs your heart.

The job is secondary. The mission is eternal.

Is that how it is for you?
