Am I in the Right Job? …Guidance From the Bible

DAY 7 OF 7

What About God’s Calling?

When we talk about “calling”, most Christians immediately think of pastors, missionaries, or full-time ministry. That’s what we often hear in church: someone “answering the call” to seminary, missions, or planting a church. It’s inspiring – but is that the only kind of calling God gives?

Not at all. If only 1% of believers are “called” to ministry, what about the rest of us?

The truth is that God calls “all of us”. And that includes you, in your “regular” job.

Jesus Himself spent most of His time outside the temple. Of His 132 public appearances, 122 were in the marketplace. Most of His parables (42 out of 52) dealt with everyday work. And in Acts, nearly every divine encounter (39 of 40) happened in the marketplace. God’s mission field has always been where people live and work, not just inside a church.

Your workplace is your mission field. And your calling is to show up there as a representative of Jesus.

That doesn’t mean preaching sermons in the break room. It means doing your job well, loving others, and being present when people around you are hurting.

The Apostle Paul reminds us that God has a plan for us to help bring His Kingdom to earth:

We are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” – Ephesians 2:10

God has also prepared your workplace just for you. He’s already placed you in relationships with people who need a listening ear, a kind word, a helping hand, or even a prayer when life gets hard.

That’s what answering God’s call looks like:

  • It’s comforting a co-worker when their marriage is crumbling.
  • It’s praying quietly for someone who just lost a loved one.
  • It’s showing patience in pressure, kindness in chaos, and love when no one else will.

You don’t need to change jobs or move countries to fulfill God’s call. He’s already positioned you right where He wants you – if you’re willing to serve.

So yes, God may call a few into full-time ministry. But for most of us, the calling is to show up faithfully at work, doing our best, helping others, and glorifying God right where we are.

And when you do that, you are answering God’s call.

So… are you in the right job? Maybe the better question is this:

Are you ready to serve God in the job you already have?

Can that be your next step? Does that help give perspective on whether or not you are in the “right job?

Blessings to you as you seek to glorify God in your work!
