Contending for the Faith in a Compromised World

DAY 2 OF 5

Day 2: URGENCY

Apostasy, the act of turning away from the truth of the Christian faith. It often involves rejecting sound doctrine, abandoning belief, or replacing biblical truth with false teaching.

Jude’s original intent was to write something more encouraging, perhaps even something celebratory. But the situation at the time he penned his epistle demanded otherwise. Truth was being distorted, grace was being twisted, and ungodliness was creeping into the church under the disguise of spirituality. So, instead, Jude writes with urgency. He pleads with believers to contend for the faith — not some version of it, not a modern remix of it, but the faith once for all time delivered to the saints. That faith doesn't change with trends. It doesn't bend to culture. And it certainly doesn’t shrink back just to keep the peace.

Contending for the faith isn’t about being combative or loud. It’s not fighting for your preferences or airing grievances on social media. It’s about guarding something sacred, something entrusted to you. Paul gave Timothy that same charge: to guard the truth God had placed in him, and to rely on the Holy Spirit’s power to do it (2 Tim. 1:14). Peter echoed a similar warning, saying that false teachers would secretly slip in and introduce destructive heresies, leading many astray (2 Pet. 2:1). This isn't a new problem, and it hasn’t gone away in modern times. You are part of a long line of believers charged with protecting the truth in a world that treats it like an opinion. The danger Jude saw wasn’t outside the church. It was inside — subtle, persuasive, and cloaked in spiritual language. That’s still happening today.

False teaching doesn’t usually sound false at first. It often sounds compassionate, or progressive, or empowering. Underneath it, however, is a denial of Christ’s authority and a rejection of God's design. This is the slow, often subtle path of apostasy: trading the truth of Christ for something easier, more popular, or self-serving. Jude is sounding the alarm — not to stir up fear, but to call believers to awareness. If you don’t know what you believe and why, you’ll either drift from the truth or be deceived outright. You must contend for the faith.

Reflect

  • Are you prepared to recognize false teaching when it sounds appealing or familiar?
  • Do you value God’s truth enough to defend it, even when it’s unpopular?
  • How can you contend for the faith in your words, actions, and relationships?
