DAY 3 OF 5

Day 3: DISCERNMENT

Deception, the act of leading someone to believe something that is not true. In spiritual context, deception often hides behind partial truths or appealing messages that twist or obscure God’s Word.

Jude doesn’t just warn that false teachers exist. He describes how they operate. He recalls the rebellion of Israel in the wilderness, the fall of angels who rejected God’s authority, and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. Each example shows a pattern: rejecting God's truth, resisting His authority, and rushing headlong into judgment. Discernment begins with recognizing that rebellion is rarely random. It follows a trajectory. It starts with questioning truth, then redefining it, and finally replacing it with something more palatable. Jude reminds his readers that this has all happened before.

The call to discernment isn’t just about spotting heresy from a distance. It’s about recognizing the subtle — and sometimes not-so-subtle — deceptions right in your own midst. Paul described how some people act religious but actually reject the power that could make them godly (2 Tim. 3:5). Jesus warned His disciples about wolves in sheep’s clothing — people who look godly from the outside but who twist the truth from within (Matt. 7:15). That’s why discernment is about more than just knowing the facts of your faith. It takes spiritual awareness, a mind shaped by Scripture, and a heart that listens for God’s voice. If you only trust what sounds good or feels right, you’re easy to mislead.

Jude goes on to describe how deception takes root: false teachers build their messages around personal revelations, reject spiritual authority, and speak confidently about things they barely understand. They may sound bold, but their message has no roots. Their voices are loud, but they don't ring with truth. That’s why discernment matters. It keeps you from being easily impressed by style when substance is missing. It trains you to test what you hear. Without spiritual discernment, you risk absorbing what is toxic while dismissing what is sacred. Eventually, you lose sight of the truth. But when your eyes are open and your heart is anchored in Scripture, you begin to see clearly, and that clarity guards your soul.

Reflect

  • How are you training your heart and mind to recognize truth from error?
  • Have you tested the voices that influence you against the Word of God?
  • What would it look like to grow in discernment this week?
