Opportunity Comes With Responsibility

Imagine you make a generous donation to a charity that builds shelters for the homeless. Months later, you discover the CEO used every cent to upgrade his own home. You would be rightly outraged, because he treated your money as if it were his.

That is how God sees it when we treat our businesses as if they belong to us.

Psalm 24:1 is clear: "The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it." And Deuteronomy 8:17–18 targets the particular self-deception that successful entrepreneurs are most vulnerable to: "You may say to yourself, 'My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.' But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth."

Even the wisdom you apply in generating wealth is entrusted to you by God.

Here is the practical difference between an owner and a steward. An owner asks: "How much of this do I have to give God to keep him happy?" The steward asks, "Why did God give me any of this? What does he want me to do with it?"

That shift changes everything, including your stress levels. If God owns your business, he is responsible for watching over it. You can bring your concerns to him and count on his wisdom and provision. The burden of ultimate ownership is not on your shoulders. It is on his.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

  1. How do you tend to run your business, as the owner or as a steward? What evidence do you see of each?
  2. What would it look like to run your business for God this week, rather than merely with his blessing?

PRAYER

Lord, I confess I often treat what you have given me as if it belongs to me alone. Please forgive my pride. Today I surrender my business back to you, its true owner. Please show me what faithful stewardship looks like in my context, and thank you that the burden of ownership rests on your shoulders, not mine.

Amen.
