Excellence Matters
When a colleague passed away after years working for a large cellphone company, nearly a thousand people attended his online memorial service. His colleagues shared that they would always hand him the most difficult clients and the most high-maintenance suppliers, because he would win them over with exceptional service every time.
He wasn't doing anything overtly "religious" at work. He was just excellent.
In Matthew 5, Jesus calls his followers the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Most of our interaction with the world happens through our work. The way we actually do our work speaks directly to the world's perception of the God who commissioned us. As Francis Schaeffer put it: "Our opportunity to be heard by the lost world would be directly related to how well we do our work."
This is confronting because Christians do not always have a good reputation in business. Some people actively avoid working with Christian-owned companies, finding them unreliable, unprofessional, or quick to cut corners. When that is true, Christian grace has been confused with permission for sloppiness.
Excellence, rightly understood, is not perfectionism. It is a wholehearted commitment to diligence and integrity in everything you do, even when no one is watching… especially then! Colossians 3:23 puts it plainly: work with all your heart, as working for the Lord. Eugene Peterson is often quoted: "Excellence doesn't just happen. It's the result of a long obedience in the same direction."
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
- What corners are you tempted to cut in your industry? In what way do you try to justify it?
- How does thinking of excellence as an act of worship, rather than a competitive strategy, change your motivation?
PRAYER
Lord, I want to work in a way that honours you, not for applause, but because you deserve my best. Please forgive me for settling for less. Please give me the discipline and integrity to do excellent work in every area of my business, even when no one else will ever know. May my work be a witness to your goodness.
Amen.
