The Day of the Lord
1Now concerning #Dan. 2:21; Acts 1:7 the times and the seasons, brothers,#5:1 Or brothers and sisters; also verses 4, 12, 14, 25, 26, 27 #ch. 4:9you have no need to have anything written to you. 2For you yourselves are fully aware that #[2 Thess. 2:2]; See Matt. 24:43; Luke 17:24the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. 3While people are saying, “There is peace and security,” then #Luke 21:34; [Ps. 35:8; Luke 17:26-30; 2 Thess. 1:9] sudden destruction will come upon them #See Isa. 13:8as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. 4But you #1 John 2:8are not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like a thief. 5For you are all #See Luke 16:8children#5:5 Or sons; twice in this verse of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness. 6So then #[Mark 13:36]; See Rom. 13:11-13 let us not sleep, as others do, but let us #See Matt. 24:42 keep awake and #See 1 Pet. 1:13be sober. 7For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, #[Acts 2:15; 2 Pet. 2:13]are drunk at night. 8But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, #Isa. 59:17; Eph. 6:14, 17 having put on the breastplate of #[Eph. 6:23]faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. 9For God has not destined us for #See ch. 1:10 wrath, but #2 Thess. 2:13, 14; [Heb. 10:39]to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10#Rom. 14:9; [2 Tim. 2:11]who died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep we might live with him. 11Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.
