Plague 10: Death of the Firstborn
God told Moses that He had one final plague in store for Egypt and this was the greatest demonstration yet of His mighty power. The plagues that had so far visited the water and air and land of Egypt were about to invade every single home and take something irreplaceable from it: the life of every firstborn son. This plague would attest to God’s power over life and death, over Min, god of reproduction and Pharaoh’s firstborn son, thought to be a god, and no Egyptian household would be spared. This time no hope remained of avoiding the consequences of disaster. The consequences would be devastatingly complete.
The Lord said: “About midnight, I will go throughout Egypt. Every firstborn son in Egypt will die, from the firstborn son of Pharaoh, who sits on the throne, to the firstborn son of the slave girl, who is at her hand mill, and all the firstborn of the cattle as well. There will be a loud wailing throughout Egypt—worse than there has ever been or ever will be again. But among the Israelites, not a dog will bark at any man or animal. Then you will know that the Lord makes a distinction between Egypt and Israel. All these officials of yours will come to me, bowing down before me and saying, ‘Go, you and all the people who follow you!’ After that I will leave.”
The next morning, every home of the Egyptians found every firstborn son lifeless. If Pharaoh had listened somewhere along the way, it wouldn’t have come to this. But he didn’t.
That tenth plague was a knockout, and Israel was not to slink out of the land of Egypt in fear. Oh, no! They were to leave the land of their slavery with all their own possessions, and many of those of the Egyptians. God’s will never lacks God’s supply. Never was this more apparent than when the Hebrews were given clothing, silver and gold as they exited Egypt.
Ten awful plagues demonstrated God’s power to Pharaoh and the Egyptians, and also to the Israelites. God had power over the sky, the wind, the earth, livestock, human health, wealth and even life and death. That’s some power! And that same power of God is invested in His will for you and me. The plagues show God’s presence, providence and power to accomplish His will in our lives.

Imagine a boxing match between Pharaoh and God. The series of plagues that came upon Pharaoh and Egypt will teach us three things. God’s presence is everywhere. His hand of providence guides history. His power has no match in the universe. As Creator of the Heavens and the Earth, His supreme love has given a unique purpose to His people—to show the world His greatness.
