Savor

Let’s build off yesterday’s idea of seeing God with the eyes of our hearts. Let's continue hanging off every stroke of creation’s artistry. Let’s now savor him.

One of the most visual books of the Bible, and rightly so, is Revelation.  God cannot communicate his beauty to us simply in script. It has to come to us in surround sound. Read Revelation 1:1-3:

The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show to his servants the things that must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John, who bore witness to the word of God and to the testimony of Jesus Christ, even to all that he saw. Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear, and who keep what is written in it, for the time is near.

John sees Christ in his coming kingdom by way of sensory majesty. Going further into vs. 10, John says that he hears behind him a loud voice like a trumpet, as Jesus the Son of Man approaches him. Then in vs. 12, he turns and sees a voice speaking to him, and what follows is an image explosion that takes us back to the temple, the Exodus event, the creation, the slaughter and resurrection of Jesus himself, and into the beauty of the church (the Bride) coming home to a dine with her King.

Seeing is not just an end in and of itself. Seeing changes you and it leads to hearing. John continually echos in Revelation the words, “he who has ears let him hear.” John acknowledges that many are deaf to the truth being communicated here. The only way to truly ingest it all is to ponder it in our heart.

The sentiment in John is echoed in Jesus’ words regarding why he spoke in parables in Matthew 13:13 when he says, “This is why I speak to them in parables: ‘Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand.’” Jesus acknowledges that we must ponder, savor, and soak on the imaginative truths of Scripture if we are to learn anything.

Today we’ve given you some “imagination passages.” Consider them and let God explode your sensory operandi with his truth and beauty.
