The crucifixion of Jesus

Thoughts on the message

I once heard a soldier describe some of this. When Pilate put a centurion (leader of 100 soldiers) in charge of Jesus’ crucifixion, he wanted everything done thoroughly. They mocked Jesus, whipped Him, beat Him, crucified Him and then stood watch over Him. Crucifying people was brutal and ugly business and these soldiers did it very effectively.

Jesus did not cry out nor would He take the wine mixed with gall (this would dull the pain). He took everything – the shame, the pain, the abuse and the horror – without any outcry or help. This was fulfillment of Isaiah 53:7

He was oppressed, and he was afflicted,
yet he opened not his mouth;
like a lamb that is led to the slaughter,
and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent,
so he opened not his mouth.

I cannot imagine how He did this.

Prayer

Father, we see the cruelty of the soldiers. Sometimes we see people react in cruel ways to people under the orders of cruel bosses and managers. It scares me how easily it can be done. I also see the way Jesus reacts to such cruelty – He says nothing, does nothing. How could He do that? I would shout, curse or react with anger somehow. Father, Jesus had such control of His spirit. Help me today to control my spirit no matter what happens. Give me Your strength today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

The Crucifixion of Jesus - Disciple Maker Series #26

Matthew writes to God’s people and walks them on a journey that will take them from where they are to be Disciple Makers. This is 26 of 27 devotional plans walking us through the book of Matthew. In this portion, Jesus is condemned by Pilate and crucified. It is brutal, shameful and it exposes the hearts of mankind. It exposes us too.
