“Courage in the Face of Fear”

There are two types of courage that are admired in the Kingdom of God. The first one I call the “fear that has said its prayers” kind of courage- courage that takes action in the midst of intense fear.

The great apostle Paul, who courageously endured imprisonment, stoning, beatings and shipwreck, was left for dead on at least one occasion and was finally beheaded. He told the Corinthians, “I was with you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling” (1 Corinthians 2:3).

We see clearly through the life of Paul that courage does not necessarily mean you are not afraid. Most often, bravery is actually demonstrated in the face of fear. It is only in facing our fears that we can conquer them and capture our destiny.

Many people are under the illusion that brave people are somehow immune to anxiety, but this is simply is not true. Fear is a human emotion common to everyone. Luke described Jesus’ emotional state hours before He was crucified by saying that Jesus was in agony to the point where he was sweating drops of blood. I would say that this was a manifestation of pretty intense fear. Courage is not an emotional state, but rather the choice we make to overcome our feelings so that we can obtain our desired outcome.

Today, be encouraged that Christ lives in you and because of that, you can face your fears with courage!
