A Call To Play SkillfullyExemplo
In Daniel 1:4 we read that King Nebuchadnezzar, a vile, vicious, and godless king, sought out men like Daniel to be leaders in his kingdom. It says that he gathered together:
Young men without any physical defect, handsome, showing aptitude for every kind of learning, well informed, quick to understand, and qualified to serve in the king's palace. He was to teach them the language and literature of the Babylonians.
Obviously, what the King looked for above all else in those to serve him, was outward appearance and gifting. Though we as Christians know that it's not what's on the outside that matters, but rather the inside, we must understand how the world interprets what to value. Because the world is looking on us as believers with an eye that is turned toward outward talents, appearances, and understanding, this presents Christians with a great opportunity to put on display the glory of God in our skills.
The Bible tells musicians over and over to play skillfully. This is command that reaches far beyond just the musician. However, rather than just thinking about what we are supposed to do in our skill, let's think about how our skill matters to the unbeliever looking on. What's at stake in our skill, is not just our reputation, excellence, or prowess, it's the very souls who may come to us seeking Christ's comfort simply because they hear something unique in our "skillful playing."
1 Peter 3:15-17 talks about Christians when they are suffering, and yet echos this same sentiment. It actually says, that Christians are to suffer with such dignity and grace that the world actually asks us to tell them about our hope. What if the same were true of our skill?
