I AM HEALED
Sometimes healing hurts. That seems a little like an oxymoron, doesn’t it? If being hurt hurts, then shouldn’t healing have the opposite effect?
We believe in the miraculous power of God. We even have “healing services” and read testimonies of medical and mental diagnoses being inexplicably turned around. Just being witness to these supernatural occurrences increases our faith that He heals [Mark 5:20].
However, the thought of healing doesn’t always elicit such a joyous response. There is often a wait between our believing Scripture’s stance on our healing [Isaiah 53:5] and experiencing the manifestation of that promise in our natural bodies. Some of us don’t experience it all here on Earth, and that can be heartbreaking!
Even the strongest of believers can begin to lose heart in the wait. Healing sometimes hurts! Even if it is not hurting you directly, the process of healing tends to touch everyone in our path. It seems to hurt even more when someone we genuinely love is walking through their process of healing and there seems to be nothing we can do to speed up the desired results.
I don’t know that we can ever escape some of the hurt that comes with healing, but Scripture provides truth that we can hang on to as God develops in us the difficult practice of waiting.
First, there are different healing processes. Some healing is miraculous [Deuteronomy 10:21], other healing is incremental [Luke 17:14], and some healing is final [2 Corinthians 5:1-5], meaning that we receive it not in our earthly bodies, but in our heavenly ones. No matter which healing journey we are experiencing, know that healing is still the promise of God to us.
Second, although it doesn’t seem like it right now, the process of healing does offer immeasurable gifts. The ultimate prize is that if we allow it, healing will draw us closer to our Maker and help us discover the peace that surpasses all (even our own) understanding. [Philippians 4:7]
Third, healing is not a future promise. It is not a place that we will arrive. It is actually our current state of being—even if our current circumstances don’t seem to be in agreement.
You see, there are facts, and there is truth. The “fact” may be that your body, mind and emotions are not quite whole right now; but the truth is that by His stripes you are healed [Isaiah 53:5]. It's up to us to take that truth and live in it daily.
