Great is Thy Faithfullness
I recently applied for long-term-care insurance and was promptly rejected. I shouldn’t have been all that surprised, what with the serious neurofibromatosis I’ve battled since my teenage years. But when my agent called to notify me I’d been turned down, I found I was plagued by all manner of self-doubts. Chief among them was a comment the agent had made during the application process. “If you have good long-term-care insurance,” he said, “you’ll have greater access to the best nursing homes.”
What does that mean? I wondered now. Will I be left to suffer in some forgotten place during my later years? Then the words of the wonderful old hymn “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” came to me:
Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see. All I have needed Thy hand hath provided; Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!
It says in Lamentations that God’s mercies are new every morning, so great is His faithfulness. That goes for nursing-home years, too, or whatever life holds for me. Each new day, when the pink edge of dawn peeks though my window shade, I will have opportunities anew to serve. I can encourage a nursing assistant going through a rough divorce, save back the lemon meringue pie on my lunch tray for a friend, go to wheelchair bingo and win a stuffed giraffe for my great-niece.
Thanks to God’s promises, His mercies will follow me wherever I go, offering strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow. And with them will come everything I need . . . and still more to give away.
I’m standing on Your promises, Lord Jesus.
