Devotional: Our Father who Comforts
Hagar, Ishmael’s mother, knew God as El Roi, which means “the God who sees me” (Genesis 16:13-14). She was in a desperate place in the wilderness. God sees us and knows our needs, no matter what position, emotional turmoil or circumstance we might find ourselves in. God wants to nurture us (Matthew 23:37), to deliver us (Psalm 34:17). God comforts us so that we can comfort others.
You may ask:
What about suffering? (Philippians 1:29-30, 1 Peter 2:21, 1 Peter 4:13, Hebrews 2:10)
Are there benefits in trials and in tribulations? (Romans 5:3-5, James 1:2-4, 1 Peter 1:6-7)
What about persecutions? (2 Timothy 3:13-15)
Testimony:
I remember a specific meeting where a good Christian friend stood up and accused me of doing many things out of order. This caught me completely by surprise, and he became very personal in front of a lot of other pastors. Driving home that evening I had a deep sense of hurt and offence. I prayed and asked God to help me. The Lord said that He would vindicate me and that I should do nothing about it. I also had to forgive this man and let go of the offence in my heart. It was a big faith tester, but the Lord comforted me and eventually vindicated me.
Reflective questions:
- In what areas are you still impatient?
- Have you experienced persecution, unfair treatment, trials, tribulations that have hurt you?
- Bring the past hurts before the Lord, ask Him to comfort you. Ask for His help to forgive where forgiveness is needed.
