Searching for a KingExemplo
Defeating our giants.
It’s easy to look at David as a mighty warrior when we read the story of David fighting Goliath, the Philistine giant. He was not a warrior. He wasn’t even a soldier. He was a shepherd and, at the moment when he finds out about Goliath’s challenge, he was a courier bringing food and supplies to his brothers on the front lines of the battle.
Chances are, if you’re like me, you don’t view yourself as a warrior. I don’t have low self-esteem but I don’t think I could stand up to a fierce enemy and go head to head in battle. However, David believed one very important thing that we all need to implant deep in our hearts. He believed God is a warrior capable of killing Goliath and David was ready to be God’s weapon of choice for the battle.
God can utterly decimate our giants. You know what your giants are. We all have them. It could be a temptation we’re struggling with, a stumbling block put in front of us by the devil. It could be a searing loss we’re struggling with in our life. Whatever we’re standing head to head against, looking at the insurmountable odds we need to realize that we aren’t doing the fighting, God is leading the charge.
David knew the only way he was going to win was through his reliance on God. In 1 Samuel 17:47 we hear David tell the giant what was about to happen when he says “For the battle is the LORD’s and He will give you into our hand.” This is a powerful statement, a humbling statement. You see… nothing we ever accomplish happens because of us, it’s always our Lord that’s in control. David knew it was only through the LORD that this giant would be conquered.
The next time you’re overwhelmed with worry, guilt, stress, anger,(fill in the blank with the emotion that applies) recite 1 Samuel 17:47 and give it up to God.
