Love your work
You know, being a working stiff isn’t so bad when you like your boss, when the job is pleasant, when you have terrific coworkers, and when the pay is more than you deserve. It gets really hard, though, when you can’t stand your boss, the work is monotonous and unfulfilling, you have to work with fools, and the pay is terrible. But what a great way to show your faith!
Scripture calls on Christians to love their work even when, especially when, their work is unlovable: “Obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to curry their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord. Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving” (Colossians 3:22-24).
Those golden verses have the key to everything: “as working for the Lord.” When pleasing your Savior is your number-one mission each day, it changes everything. You are freed from the pressure of deciding if you feel like putting forth your best effort. Christians work hard all the time, especially when no one’s watching, especially when you don’t like your boss.
Work with all your heart—maybe even singing quietly to yourself—because after all you’re doing it for your Lord Jesus. He sees. He remembers.
