Word And SpiritExemplo
DAY FIVE: What Happens When We Marry Word and Spirit
Much of the preaching I have done in my lifetime—if I am utterly candid—was “Word only.” When people came to Westminster Chapel, they did not expect to see things happen; they came to hear the Word.
Conversely, there are churches where people go not so much to hear but to see things happen. Who can blame them?
Jesus, however, could dazzle the multitudes with the power of His word as easily as when He performed miracles. The people were astonished when He spoke and astonished when He healed. The combination of the Word and the Spirit in great and equal measure will do that.
Would you like to see the glory of God, genuine miracles, and the fear of the Lord return to the church? Would you like to see a return to the Gospel by which the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ is extolled and honored? Would you like to see people astonished by teaching and preaching as easily as signs and wonders move them?
When this takes place, as my friend Lyndon Bowring puts it, “Those who come to see will hear, and those who come to hear will see.”
May God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit bless you and keep you now and evermore. Amen.
