Practicing The Examen

Dia 2 de 5

The heart of the Examen is the practice of reviewing your day. Look back in your mind over the last 24 hours. Notice both the good and the broken.

You can start your reflection by finding things to be grateful for. 1 Chronicles 16:34 encourages you to “give thanks to the Lord, for he is good.” Gratitude opens you up to God and trains you to see God’s presence in your day-to-day life.

As you look back over your day, you’ll also think of problems and frustrations. Expose these to God too. Jehoshaphat demonstrated bringing his laments to God when he prayed, “we are powerless against this great multitude that is coming against us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you” (Chronicles 20:12). Invite God into your problems and powerlessness.

The Examen brings God into the ups and the downs of your daily life. Over time you’ll see God at work in the blessings you experience, and you'll see how God is working with you to heal what's broken.

Practice the Examen:

1. Tune into God’s presence. God, be with me as I reflect on my day.

2. Review your day. What gave me joy today? What troubled me today?

3. Notice your emotions. What made me feel most strongly?

4. Discern. What are you asking me to notice, God?

5. Look ahead. What guidance do you have for me?

Prayer: God, thank you for what was good today. Help me where I am helpless. I dedicate my work to you.
