GO2020 | ENGAGE: February Week 4 — PRAYERExemplo
February 24—The Power of Prayer
Read
1 Kings 18:16-45
Reflect
This week we will discover through God’s Word, the incredible things that happen when God’s people pray. We have been studying the pattern and promises that God gives us, and as we read and think about the incredible, limitless power that God has, it will strengthen our faith to pray bold, faith-filled prayers that only God can answer! There is power in prayer!
In today’s Scripture we read about a battle between prophets: The prophet of the Lord God and the prophets of Baal. The prophets of Baal had the opportunity to call upon their god first. When they didn’t hear from their god they limped around the altar, they cut themselves, they raved. Baal’s answer is very telling: “no one answered; no one paid attention” (verse 29 ESV).
Elijah’s preparation was very different. Notice that he called the people to come near to him (verse 30), eventually leading them to a time of intimacy with God. Then he repaired the altar—a time of rededication to God (verse 30). And finally, he offered a sacrifice (verse 33) that would please God and serve as an offering for their sin.
Engage
Read today’s Scripture passage. Say or write it out in your own words, considering the following questions:
· What do they say about God?
· What do they say about us?
· Is there a promise to trust?
· Is there a command to obey?
· How will I apply these Scriptures to my life?
· Who will I show that I care by sharing this truth?
Memorize
Now read this week’s memory verse, James 5:16b. Spend a few minutes beginning to memorize it.
