March 30—The Salvation of Souls

Read

Luke 8:35-39

Reflect

As Christians we are called to genuinely love and care for the poor and needy. We know, however, that all the help in the world is ultimately not enough. We also have to be concerned for the spiritual needs of these same people. As Jesus tells us, we can gain the whole world and lose our soul (Matthew 16:26). In the same way we can provide every physical need someone has, but ultimately, we haven’t served them well if we ignore or omit the spiritual component. As we serve, let’s pray that God would open the hearts of those we serve that they would be open to the gospel.

Engage

Read today’s Scripture passage. Say or write it out in your own words, considering the following questions:

· What does it say about God?

· What does it say about us?

· Is there a promise to trust?

· Is there a command to obey?

· How will I apply this Scripture to my life?

· Who will I show that I care by sharing this truth?

Memorize

Now read this week’s memory verse, 1 Peter 4:11. Spend a few minutes beginning to memorize it.

When believers are serving the least, the last and the lost, we can easily forget the final goal. Christians are called to care about all suffering, but we must never forget the particular emphasis we have regarding eternal suffering. As Christians we must always keep in mind that the ultimate goal is the salvation of sinners to the glory of God.
