Five Days of Jesus’ Names

Jesus the Great I Am and the Living Word

We read in John 1:1 and 1:14 how Jesus, who is God, took on life and “dwelt among us.” The term “dwelt” that we see in that verse means to “pitch your tent.” Literally, the verse reads, “the Word became flesh and tented among us.”

This is the scene within which John introduces the concept that Jesus has “tented” among us. He came into a sin-soaked world, a wilderness of souls, bringing the presence of God through His own mercy. He came to bring life where life was not found. He did it for them then, and He still does it for us today.

He dwells among us. He is in our midst. Just as He was when He walked in Israel. He walked the streets. He talked. He ate. He did all the things humans did, but He did it as the manifested Word—the revelation of God. There has never been, nor will there ever be, another Jesus because He is uniquely one of a kind.

Additional study:

1. Read Revelation 19:13. Share what the name “Word of God” as it relates to Jesus means to you personally?

2. Is abiding in the written Word of God a form of abiding in the living Word of God? Why or why not? What does the word “abide” mean to you?
