Life On Mission

Dia 11 de 30

While on a hike with my wife in Arizona, I had the novel idea of trekking away from the beaten trail. She reluctantly followed me as we navigated the large rocks, trees and bushes. We found a cool rock formation that I climbed and aptly shouted, “I’m the king of the world!” We probably got about 100 yards from the trail when there was a sudden sound just 20 feet away. It was the sound of breaking sticks and rustling leaves.

In my attempt to rescue myself I might have nudged Grace towards the terrifying sound. She didn’t appreciate that. We eventually made it to the trail and my wife promptly informed me that we would never ever be doing that again.
When it comes to meeting hurting and broken people where they are, we can feel a similar anxiety and tension. It’s not that we are scared, but it is unchartered territory. It’s unknown and risky. However, we have been placed here to be proactive about bringing peace. So, it’s going to take a little effort, intentionality and boldness.

Jesus takes a similar posture with the Samaritan woman in John 4. He walks right up to her and engages her in a very personal and very important discussion. He crossed cultural and religious boundaries for her sake. It would be his reputation that would get criticized because of the conversation, but he didn’t seem to care. She experiences acceptance, love and Jesus declares value to her. The ramifications were far greater than what happened just to her.

If we choose to follow Jesus’ pattern of ministry we’ll be drawn to the margins of society to bring good news.

Pray that God would give you boldness and opportunities to love people that are broken and hurting. Pray that God would give you his heart for them.
