A God Who Acts For His People

ADDITIONAL READING EXODUS 1-4

One day Moses is out in the desert tending his sheep and he sees a bush on fire, but it’s not burning up. He’s naturally curious so goes over to have a look to see what’s what. Well, what’s what is that God’s voice comes out of the bush and God speaks with Moses! He tells Moses that He’s seen the misery and that He’s heard the cry of His people and He’s going to act, and that Moses will be God’s guy to speak on behalf of God to Pharaoh and help free the people from slavery.

Moses has lots of questions, the chief one being how will the Hebrew people know that he has been sent by God. God says (3:14) tell them I AM WHO I AM has sent you. Tell them I AM has sent you. This description of God by Himself is such a powerful name and links back to the time before Abraham and the covenant.

But where it really shocks is when Jesus uses it Himself in John 8:58. ‘Very truly I tell you,’ Jesus answered, ‘before Abraham was born, I am!’ So Jesus is before the Jews and claiming to be God. They were very angry about this and sought to stone Him. That is how powerful these few words are because it is God describing Himself.

So what can we learn? God is not remote. He speaks to us through the Bible. He hears when we call out. God’s plan has been to act and save His people. He did this through the death and resurrection of Jesus.
