The Cost of Following ChristExemplo
Growth From Sacrifice
It was a stunning summer evening in Sydney. The day felt warm, the sky was crystal blue, and all I could think of was ‘should we or shouldn’t we?’
A couple of weeks earlier, my wife and I were asked by our Pastors to take on a significant volunteer role within our local church, and we needed to get back to them the following day. I knew the role was outside our comfort zone and would require hard work, sacrifice, and perseverance. It was six months into having our second child, and life was already full, considering we had no immediate family in Sydney, and my position at work was intense. Given these circumstances, it was not logical to take on the volunteer role. Ultimately, we both sensed it was the right thing for us as a family because of our love for Jesus and building His Church.
It’s been a few years since we made that decision, and I’m so glad we did. I can’t begin to tell you how much we’ve grown, the amazing people we’ve met, the opportunities that have come our way. In the same breath, we’ve had to sacrifice our time, desires, energy, finance, and more. Our lives are much richer and fuller as a result!
It is seldom convenient to be a Jesus follower. It will more than likely require you to lay down your life to take on the cause of Christ. ‘Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it’ – Jesus (Matthew 10:39).

The truth of the matter is that we all are called to forsake all and to pick up our cross and follow Christ. That is the Christian life. The readings this week help us reflect on the cost of following Christ. The goal is instead to shift our attention heavenward and to cultivate a heart that can see God’s big picture.
