The Prince of Peace

Jesus in Isaiah is called the “Prince of Peace.”  He brought peace into our lives. Peace is so important- it guides us and helps us to make the right decisions. The peace that Jesus leaves with us is an encouragement, not a source of grief or loss. Jesus’ departure and eventual return are sources of immense, transcendent peace in the present.

The peace Jesus speaks of isn’t an empty peace such as the world promises. (Isaiah 59:8) describes the world as not knowing the way of peace, and John 14:27 makes this point also.

As John says, right before his famous verse in John 3:16, “whoever believes in him may have eternal life.” Anyone can have this peace. The promise is conditional – whosoever believes. But once you believe, you can have peace with God because we have been justified by faith (Rom 5:1). If you have anything else but faith, like smarts, works, or cleverness, you have to maintain that to keep your peace. Colossians states, “let the peace of Christ.” Peace only comes from being in him, the Prince of Peace. Peace doesn’t come from your circumstances but from knowing Jesus. He is our peace (Eph 2:14) and the peace that his Kingdom brings, to that there will be no end (Isaiah 9:7).

The peace Jesus brings is God’s. God is good on his end if we’re good on ours. This isn’t works-righteousness. It’s getting the right order. Faith before peace. Making room for faith in Jesus, for peace. If only we believe and trust, and never let go of his goodness. If only we dare to believe this good news. We can have peace with God, peace of God, peace within ourselves, relationships, families, workplaces, churches, and even our enemies!
