Walking Through a Spiritual Drought

Step Away, but Don’t Quit

Maybe the things you once loved doing for the Lord have subsided? You know that kind of passion we have all felt when we lead, worship, or serve others? If you are feeding your brain negative thoughts such as, “I quit, I’m done, I’m leaving,” I want you to stop!

God has equipped you with gifts and a love to serve Him in His house. That’s why He put that desire in you in the first place. But there will be times when you are exhausted, run-down, or just plain tired and unmotivated. God wants you to rest in Him instead of quitting the things you love doing for Him in those times. Genesis 1 and 2 say that God made everything in six days, and on the seventh day, He rested. He did not keep going; he stepped back and rested. Don’t let the enemy win. Do not allow Satan to feed you lies and distract you from rest with more busyness. Take a step back and rest in Him. That fire inside of you will burn brighter if you only allow yourself to take some time to rest and feast on the Word, pray, and worship. We find rest in the Lord by spending time in His presence.

Here are a few verses and questions that will encourage you not to quit but to find rest:

Ephesians 4:27

Don’t give the Devil a way to Defeat you.

Psalms 62:1

Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from Him.

Psalms 62:5

Yes, my soul finds rest in God, my hope comes from him.

While you are at rest, here are a few questions to ponder for today:

  1. What in your life is causing you to feel burned out? What action are you going to take to grow spiritually?
  2. What areas in your life will you need to step back to fall into God’s rest?
