[Run to Win] Rules of the GameExemplo
A Spectacle to the World
Everyone has probably seen a show at least once, so let’s place ourselves in ancient Greece, where the apostle Paul preached and spread Christ’s gospel in cities like Corinth. At that time, shows were very different from the ones we know today.
The Roman arena was the center of the games or, more specifically, the battles. In these games, condemned criminals, captives of war, and wild beasts fought to the death. The audience in the coliseums followed every move of the players whose life depended on being the winner. However, the winner was not usually set free; instead, he was put back in line for another battle. They were called the “devoted” or “appointed to death.”
Athletes today do not perform in the same situation but face the unique challenge of constant exposure. Beyond their playing abilities, they are given a megaphone depending on how successful they are in their sport. Athletes have a willing and eager audience who will pay attention and often, judge them, for what they do say.
We are God’s athletes, and we need to be reminded of Paul’s exhortation conveying that the world is listening. You and I are always on display as if we are part of a spectacle. So, let’s be aware of our words and actions because they can affect those who hear or see us—either positively or negatively. Let’s choose to be a good influence for those watching.
Present yourself in word and deed with humility and Christlike character, knowing that you are on display before the world in the theater of life. Seek to edify others and point them to Christ, who has given you this stage to make Him known.
Lord, help me see the privilege I have been given as an athlete, not only to play my sport well but to represent You in this theater of life. Teach me to play with courage and humility and always represent You faithfully, knowing that the people who watch me may come to know You through me. Thank You for giving me this stage to point those around me to You.
