Rest Assured: Relationships
Raise your hand if you’ve recently said something you shouldn’t have to someone you cared about and were unable to rest easy for the remainder of the day? It’s OK—let’s virtually see those hands!
My wife and I have been married since 1976, and we early on made a pact, which we share more in today’s video, that we will never get angry with each other in public. We also agreed to begin each day praying with one another, and as Debbie shares, because we place our relationship in God’s hands and take the time to recharge ourselves, we more or less do not get angry with one another.
Paul encourages us in Ephesians 4, in which Debbie also shares that in relationships, we must “bear with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” How many relationships today could be amended if they were based on gentleness and humility? I’m sure more than you know.
So, how can you build rest in your relationships today? Begin with taming your tongue. Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouth, especially to those you care about. Second, forgive. And then forgive again. Someone I know closely had their digestion improve instantly when they had a personal one-on-one conversation with an individual who wronged them. It was a time of reconciliation for both involved—imagine how good they slept that night, too! Lastly, ask God if there is anyone with whom you need to make amends. You may not like the answer, but He will provide you with the strength and the right words to say at the right time.
Our prayer for you today is that if any of your relationships could use some TLC, ask God how he wants you to help reconcile, and rest assured, it is ultimately for your benefit.
