The Glories of AltarsExemplo
Be Commissioned
com·mis·sioned | kəˈmiSHəned | verb
— to formally accept God’s call, charge, order, or mandate with His accompanying authority and power to fulfill it
Each of us has a calling, a Kingdom purpose. Sometimes the Lord’s commission comes as a sudden knowing and may even be accompanied by an extraordinary God-experience. It can also be more like a dawning, our true identity dormant, awaiting an appointed time.
When I sensed the Lord calling me to home school our children, the understanding came in increments. I argued with God as I battled my fears. I talked all impressions over with my husband (of course) and those I respect. Eventually, I was sure, accepted the call, and launched.
We see myriads of people called and commissioned in Scripture in both the Old and New Testaments. Jesus Himself was commissioned by the Father and Spirit at His baptism. In turn, He commissioned His disciples and sent them out.
This altar often becomes a transition where we close a door to an old season and launch anew. Those who love us can help verify God’s call and encourage us as we pursue it. Though we each have unique commissions, as Christ followers, we all share unifying ones such as “go make disciples of all nations…” (Mat. 28:19–20).
Let us be commissioned
- Ask the Lord to reveal His call on Your life. Perhaps He already has. Take time to articulate what you believe He is revealing.
- Approach the altar with reverence and hope.
- Articulate to God what you believe you are being commissioned to do and humbly accept His invitation.
- Ask the Lord to empower you to fulfill His call. Anointing oil touched to the forehead is sometimes used as a symbol of accepting the Lord’s commission and being empowered to do the mission.
- Definite action follows commission. Leave the altar committed to obediently do the very next step toward your call.
- Wise counsel is essential in commission. If accepting this commission will disrupt the lives of others, it is wise to ask for their input and blessing as you pursue God’s will for your life.
