"A Wee bit 'O Celo'bration"

Act 1 of Numbers comes to an end in Chapter 10, as Act 2 of this drama begins. Before the tents collapse and the caravan commences for the long arduous journey toward the Promised Land, God sends shock once more into the hearts of his people. In Numbers Chapter 10 he commands the people to make trumpets.

Among all the commotion of moving, packing, and loading up, some of the people are forced to stop and take time to fashion, create, and shape these processional instruments. The question that might come to mind at this point is, “Why?” To understand why God issued this word of instruction we must understand the nature of the trumpet.

The trumpet appears at various times throughout Scripture both in the Old Testament and the New Testament, and due to contents contained in other passages that also speak about the trumpet, we can derive some insightful meaning into why God includes this here. The trumpet throughout Scripture often symbolizes a turning point and is connected to the idea of a celebration.

God crafts a rhythm of celebration into his kingdom people. He needs them, in the journey, to realize that he has closed a chapter on their season of slavery. Though Israel had not completely arrived, they were to rejoice in the significance of all that God had already done in them. Praise is their response to freedom. The trumpet represents a transition from war to celebration, and it prepares Israel here to march expectantly against any enemies to come.

When Jesus comes, the resurrection of the dead will be connected to a trumpet blast, and the seven trumpets sounding in judgment before the unbelieving people of earth will bring about the demise of the earthly system of Babylon, and will sound forth a processional of Christ’s reign—forever and ever. The trumpet again will symbolize the end of a war and the beginning of a kingdom of celebration. At the Second Coming of Jesus, he will defeat every enemy once and for all.
