Discovering Your Identity in ChristExemplo
Created in His Image
Let’s begin by reading Genesis 1:27 (NLT) below.
“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.”
Did you see it? Right there, at the very beginning of the story are the beautiful words – ‘So God created mankind in his own image...’ It’s a simple fundamental truth, but we can often overlook it in our quest to find out who we are.
The truth is we were created in the image of God to have a relationship WITH God. It’s a truth we can so often overlook in the day-to-day. Even Adam and Eve who walked and talked with God in the garden missed it! The minute they were confronted with the idea that perhaps God was withholding something for them, they opted to ignore the fact that they were created in God’s image and chose what the enemy was offering as something that would allow them to ‘be like God’ (Genesis 3:5). It was like they traded in what they already had for something that might give them what they already had... If that sounds confusing, well, that’s the point.
We are all looking for things that will help us be more of who we already are! Today instead of trying to be someone or something, maybe let's take a moment to breathe. Let's take a look in the mirror and remind ourselves – we are already made in the image of God!
Let’s Reflect
Take a moment to read Genesis 1:26 – 31. Take note of what God says in verse 31 about his thoughts about His creation.
Today as you go about your day, be mindful of what thoughts you allow to run unchecked through your thinking. Every now and then, simply stop and ask yourself – what have I been thinking about myself? To help, you could add a sticky note to your computer or your mirror with a reminder from Genesis 1:27 – 'I am made in the image of God.'
As you become conscious of any thought that might be a comparison or a negative idea. Take a moment and reject the negative thinking and say: "No, I am created in the image of God!".
