Biblical Self-Care (Part 4)

So much of our work is about getting people to like us, isn’t it? We work so hard on school projects because we want the teacher to notice our potential. We show up early or stay late at our jobs because we want to impress our managers. We have Pinterest birthday parties, filter our social media selfies, and volunteer for six things because we want people to think we are good moms, good people, and good church members. Getting people to like us is work!

That’s not how it works with Jesus (thank God!). The good news of the Christian faith is that getting God to like you isn’t based on how much you worked but rather on the work of Jesus. Instead of setting up a spiritual obstacle course to heaven and making you sweat, Jesus did the work for you.

Remember Jesus the night before He died? It was His season of suffering, and He loved you so much that He didn’t quit until the work was done. He didn’t care about self-care or Himself in that moment, because He cared about you. He finished His work of forgiving your sins so your relationship with God wouldn’t be about works.

Getting people to like us can be exhausting, but Jesus offers us the grace of eternal rest. “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest . . . and you will find rest for your souls” (Matthew 11:28,29).
