Living a Life WorthyExemplo
Day 3: Studying Scripture
Studying scripture is another way that we have to get to know God and His Character. For this week, we are going to use the acronym H.E.A.R. to really dig into and study scripture. Make sure to write this down so that you can refer back to it as you continue to study scripture.
Highlight - As you are reading the passage look for one or two verses that stand out to you. After highlighting them, write a letter “H” in your journal and write out the verses that you highlighted.
Explain - Below the “H” in your journal, write an “E.” Write down a few sentences to explain what you just read in your own words. It is a great idea to also look at a commentary for this step (some good commentary apps are Blue Letter Bible and Enduring Word), type the passage into the app and see what it has to say. Ask questions like: Why was this written? To whom was it originally written? How does this fit with the verses before and after? Why did the Holy Spirit include this passage in the book?
Apply - Below the “E” in your journal, write an “A.” We will now take what was written in the first century (or earlier if you are reading the Old Testament) and try our best to apply it to our lives today. Ask questions like: How can this help me? What does this mean today? What would the application of this verse look like in my life? What is God saying to me?
Respond - How should you respond to what you just read and studied? Maybe it will be a call to action. Maybe it will be a prayer asking God to help you work this truth into your life. Whichever, make sure it is measurable so you can hold yourself accountable in your growth.
Next Steps
My challenge for you today will require you to grab a pen and paper as you read Ephesians 4. Always make sure to start your time with the Lord in prayer. Invite Him into your time with Him and ask Him to reveal something new about Himself to you today. Study Ephesians 4 using the H.E.A.R. acronym that we discussed today.
