Get Ready for a Miracle - Discover Hope and Faith When Facing the ImpossibleExemplo
Day 3: Guard Your Tongue
The power of our spoken words is not to be taken lightly. Proverbs 18:21 tells us that "death and life are in the power of the tongue," emphasizing that our words can either build us up or tear us down. Throughout our journey of waiting and hoping, we learned the value of using our words wisely.
Throughout those years of uncertainty, we occasionally faced discouragement. We listened to well-meaning yet disheartening comments from friends and family and acknowledged the realistic yet challenging diagnoses from doctors. But, we made a conscious decision not to let these words shape our reality. Instead, we intentionally said 'when we have kids' rather than 'if we have kids.'
We chose a different path. We decided to align our words with God's promises, not with our current circumstances. We spoke words of life and faith, not of doubt. It was a subtle shift in our vocabulary, but it marked a significant change in our hearts and minds.
Our decision to intentionally frame our anticipation of children in words of faith was directly inspired by the story of Abraham and his servant in Genesis 24. In this account, Abraham gives his servant instructions to find a wife for Isaac, clearly stating she should not come from the daughters of the Canaanites, amongst whom they were living. However, when the servant relayed these directives to Laban, he subtly portrayed their dwelling as the land of the Canaanites, a shift that was small in wording but significant in perspective. Abraham was living in the Promised Land, the land God had vowed to him and his descendants. He saw himself living in his land, even though it was still populated by the Canaanites. His words reflected his faith in God's promise.
Similarly, we learned to guard our tongues, ensuring our words aligned with God's promises and His character, rather than the discouraging reports and diagnoses. Even when we faced discouragement, even when the situation looked bleak, we chose to speak words of faith. It was a continuous journey, but we saw the power of our words in keeping hope alive, in reminding us of God's promises, and in fortifying our faith as we waited for our miracle.
Our journey taught us this: words can pave the way for miracles, or they can build walls of doubt and despair. Choose your words wisely. Speak life, speak faith, speak hope - and see how God can move.
