Day 1: Firm Foundation

It was October 2020, and the effects of the pandemic were taking a toll on my body, mind, and emotions. Along with some personal challenges affecting my family, it was all becoming too much to bear. Hopelessness was setting in and I was constantly on the verge of a panic attack.

Finally, one morning I felt the Lord say, “You’re going to sing your way out of this today.” I was genuinely curious as I asked in response, “How are we gonna do that?” The song, “Firm Foundation,” was the result. I remember getting ready for the day, walking around my house, the lyrics pouring out from the depths of my heart…

Christ is my firm foundation

The rock on which I stand

When everything around me is shaken

I’ve never been more glad

That I put my faith in Jesus

‘Cause He’s never let me down

He’s faithful through generations

So why would He fail now?

He won’t

I remember the first time those two words, “He won’t,” came out of my mouth. I started chuckling. Joy began taking over the chaos in my mind. Panic gave way to praise. Hopelessness crumbled in the face of hope. As I continued to sing, the Holy Spirit drew me to Matthew 7:24-27:

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash (NIV).”

I love that passage because as believers in Jesus, that’s our reality. Christ is our firm foundation. He is our anchor and reason to hope.

Even when everything around us is being shaken, He is our firm foundation. Even when nothing seems to make sense, He is our firm foundation. Even when the storms of life come and the winds of this world blow, He is our firm foundation. Even when our future seems uncertain and circumstances feel overwhelming, He is our firm foundation!

He’s been faithful through generations, so why would He fail now? He won’t!
