Who Is God? Exploring the Attributes of GodExemplo
The immutability of God
Life is full of changes. I know this is an understatement. Who has not experienced a change in their life?
As a nurse, I have seen change on an ongoing basis. Process change, new drugs, policy change, new leadership, new staff, and the list goes on. In nursing, change is part of the profession. My co-workers and I used to joke that change is the only thing that stays the same. So, adapting to changes was a part of my work and life.
One of God’s attributes is immutability. Immutability means God does not change. He is the same in His being, plans, purposes, and promises. In His call for Israel to repent through the prophet Malachi, God said, “I am the Lord, and I do not change…..” Malachi 3:6a (NLT)
God is the creator and sovereign ruler of the world. There will never be another God. God told the prophet Isaiah, “Remember the things I have done in the past. For I alone am God! I am God, and there is none like me.” Isaiah 46:9 (NLT)
In the beginning, God promised a Savior to the world. A plan, purpose, and promise he had before he created the world. Just think, if halfway through the Old Testament, God changed this promise, how would we be able to atone for our sins? How could we place our total trust in Him?
God has no beginning or end. He does not improve with time. God can’t change for the better because that would mean He is not perfect. If He changed for the worse, He is not God. Wouldn't that be a scary thought if God changed?
Change for us is inevitable. We can’t escape it; however, we can have comfort and confidence in the God who never changes. He is always dependable, and He always keeps His promises. So, in the midst of a changing world, we can find security in the unchanging nature of God.
Reflect:
What change in your life are you experiencing right now?
In what ways has God given you confidence in that change?
