What Should I Say? Devotions From Time Of Grace

Dia 1 de 4

My sister is living like an unbeliever

It is the curse of the age in which we live that the majority of people believe that there is no absolute truth, that everything is relative, that people are free to decide on their own sense of right and wrong. Nobody can tell anybody else what to do. Nobody is allowed to judge anyone else.

You would expect those philosophies from unbelievers. What a shock it is when you hear those ideas and see an unchristian lifestyle from someone who was brought up in the faith. It’s a big deal. God’s holy law is binding upon every human being; all are accountable to him, whether they know it or not, whether they believe it or not.

The way people think and talk and live matters to God: “The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God” (Galatians 5:19-21). What to do when someone you love is flirting with spiritual suicide?

Never give up. Earn the right to speak by listening first. Love unconditionally. Keep your panic down and your voice soft. Don’t nag, but do speak God’s words of law to awaken the conscience you know is still there. Assure her of God’s boundless mercy. Pray for her. And then watch patiently for signs of spiritual life again.
