"Go to the Mountain"

God’s calling should be viewed in the context of Gods providence and his discipline. Every phase is just as important, and cannot be hurried. We should also remember that God’s calling can come at any given stage. For example Joseph and David received their calling early in life but they had to go through a long phase of God’s discipline, before they were equipped to handle their assignment. In the case of Moses, his calling came after 40 years of experiencing God’s discipline.

Exodus 3:1 Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God.

Horeb means waste, and it was here in the wastelands that Moses heard Gods call. This supposed wasteland was the mountain of God-the holy ground. Ex 3:5 “Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.”

The holy ground was not in Egypt, it wasn’t in the desert, nor was it by the well, neither was it in Jethro’s home, but it was in Horeb- the wasteland. What others viewed as a wasteland was in fact the mountain of God. It was in this very place that Moses received the law; it was here he communed with God.

What others may consider a waste could be the holy ground where God reveals his assignment. During the course of the monotonous routines of life a thought, a vision, a reading, may grab your attention. As you make your way up, to observe and obtain greater clarity you may soon find out that you are indeed approaching holy ground.

My Calling

What does the term ‘calling’ mean? Is it an audible voice? A dream? An ecstatic experience? How can I discern God’s calling for my life? Moses lived a purposeful life after that ‘burning bush’ experience, but does that discount all the previous years? Here are some lessons that can help us understand our calling, based on Moses’ life.
