Learn Rest From the Psalms: Rest Well Resolution

Dia 2 de 4

What stands in the way of you resting well?

Big plans for the future?
Others’ expectations?
Fears of failing?
Crammed calendar?

I need to learn to rest more. I’m on this journey with you, and I’m full of reasons why “rest well” rarely fits in my life.

Just looking at my packed schedule, big dreams, or development goals feels like proof enough. I have a lot going on. I also like to have a lot going on.

When I find space in my calendar, I fill it with something. I have several to-do lists going on at all times, and I’m painfully aware of the many pressing tasks I haven’t gotten to yet. I’m a woman on a mission, so when I think about maximizing my time, my thoughts typically go to “work smarter not harder” instead of “work hard rest well.”

As an author and Bible teacher, I like to work and I’m passionate about what I do. So as I looked at my goal planning a few weeks ago, I asked God, “God, can I really resolve to rest?”

He had me turn to Psalm 23 and reminded me that rest doesn’t mean I’m inactive. I’ve included the whole of that psalm in today’s plan and as you read it, try to notice the actions and movement described in these verses.

Sometimes rest includes lying down. Other times it’s in how you walk. Where and when you sit. How you’re strengthened. Where you go. What you pay attention to. And how you journey with God.

“The Lord is My Shepherd” is a song title David was qualified to use because long before he became king or a decorated warrior, David himself was a shepherd. He knew what it took to care well for sheep.

The foes you face today may include the tyranny of the urgent, unhealthy drivers, or literal enemies. Stay attentive to notice how peace, pace, and the active presence and provision of God offer you rest. Whether lying down to sleep, receiving God’s anointing, or being refreshed while still in the middle of the valley of shadows, you really can rest well as you live with the Lord your Shepherd.

Persevere in your resolve to rest. I promise it’s worth it, and I’ll see you tomorrow for day three.
